Ideas for Unique Planters to Hang on a Fence

If you’re looking for the new style of planters that hang on to a fence, one of the easiest ways to find these is at your local garden centre.

There you will find a few different options that could be mounted on a fence with a hook or completely over the top of a railing on some decking.

They are usually made of wood or plastic, and most are quite basic and don’t have much character so it depends on what look you’re trying to achieve with your garden.

On the plus side, they are often not very expensive and come in a variety of colours. However, if you are trying to make your garden a bit more unique or can’t afford to buy new at the moment, try and shop your own home or garden for ideas.

If nothing catches your eye, browse a local market or even charity shops, here’s some inspiration for when you’re looking around your home or out at the shops.

It’s possible for everyone to repurpose ordinary items to hold flowers and vines, and they will look far more visually interesting than those that are planted in plastic or wooden planters.

Repurpose Old Metal Toolboxes

Do you have a couple of old metal toolboxes that would make better planters than storage containers for tools? The rustier and the more chipped and worn the better.

Repurpose your old metal toolboxes to hang on a fence using them with open lids. You can either put them on an outdoor shelf to provide support from beneath or screw the box to the wall. Drill several holes in the bottom, or side depending on which area will be against the wall.

Add small pebbles to the bottom which will further facilitate drainage. Lastly, the fun part, add fertile organic soil and flowers and greenery of your choice. The only tool that you will need for these toolboxes is a small spade.

Other great items that can be found in reclamation yards are old metal watering cans or rubber tyres! These both make very different but pretty planters and are very versatile.

Upcycle a Canvas Bag

Old bags make fantastic fence planters. Unlined canvas is ideal since it provides plenty of drainage and support for soil and plants.

Place your pot of flowers inside, or with small bags fill them with soil and the plants directly. Make sure the plants are positioned high enough to get sunlight.

The bags themselves will eventually deteriorate over time, but they will look fantastic for months before this. You can also have the satisfaction that you recycled something which would have otherwise been thrown away or sat in a cupboard.

Hang a Pitcher of Flowers on a Fence

Old metal pitchers make lovely planters. You can add hooks to your fence and place the handle of the pitcher over each hook.

Very easy to put together and this idea adds lots of character and charm to your garden.

If you can make some small holes in the base of the pitcher and place little stones in the bottom for drainage.

Then add soil and your flowers, a bit of trailing ivy also looks beautiful in these containers.

Suspend Boots Filled with Flowers

When looking for unique planters to hang on a fence, consider your old pairs of boots. This is quite an unusual idea but will be a real talking point!

Gather your old boots and even your children’s. You can either place the wellington boots on their side against the fence and nail the inside of the boot to the fence.

Or put hooks on the fence and in the top of the back of each boot make a hole. Put some string through the hole and make a loop and tie in a knot. Then each wellie can be hung on a hook.

For best results, do not fill the boots with soil. Instead, place small pots inside. The boots will last much longer since the material will not be exposed directly to wet soil.
