Outdoor Living: How to Give Your Garden an Upgrade

Most people stay on top of their home’s interior decoration and overall quality, but that’s not always true of their garden. The UK’s weather means that months can go by without setting foot out there, which also means it’s less likely that spending time in the garden will become anything close to a regular habit.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. If you have a garden, then it’s worthwhile making an effort to bring your garden up to a good standard. A few minor improvements can go a long way towards improving livability and functionality, which in turn will significantly increase the amount of time you spend out there.

In this post, we’ll outline some ironclad strategies that can quickly transform your garden. In a matter of months, you might just find that your garden is your favourite place on the planet.

Reimagine the Space

You weren’t using your garden before, so why not take a new approach? Many homeowners try to transform their experience of their garden while limiting themselves to working with whatever’s already there. A better approach is to start with a blank canvas and create a space that really works for you. Adding plants, installing garden decking, and even considering a garden studio/office/summerhouse can help to create what is, in effect, an entirely new backyard area that works with your needs in mind. The bottom line? Be ambitious — you’ll be much more likely to spend time out there if you design the space correctly.

Upgrade Your Furniture

Most people add budget-friendly furniture to their gardens, on the basis that the elements will only ruin it anyway. But this approach has a negative ripple effect. Low-quality furniture will make you much less likely to spend time out there (who wants to spend all day sitting on an uncomfortable plastic chair). Plus, since you assume that the weather will ruin the furniture, it probably will (you’ll have already given up and won’t take steps to keep the furniture protected).

Investing in quality furniture really can make a huge difference. Not only is it better in virtually every regard (looks better, feels better), but you’ll also actually want to take care of it. Furniture only becomes damaged if it’s left exposed to the elements.

In any case, no one who spends slightly more to get good outdoor furniture (and we’re not kidding, it really usually is only slightly more) goes on to regret their decision. When the sun is shining and you’re as comfortable as can be in your garden, you’ll know you made the right choice.

Peaceful, Zen Environment

Finally, look at giving your garden a touch of zen. In chaotic periods, we could all do with a relaxing, happy space to retreat to — and there’s nowhere better for that than your own garden. Add a water feature, make space for relaxing activities such as meditation and yoga, and plant flowers that attract wildlife. It’ll be the perfect way to insulate yourself from the madness of the outside world.
