What You Need to Build an Outdoor Shed

Building an outdoor shed can be a rewarding DIY project that adds storage space and value to your property. Whether you're stashing gardening tools, bikes, or seasonal decor, a well built shed keeps your belongings organized and protected from the elements.

To get the job done right, you'll need the right materials, the right tools, and the right fasteners, especially dependable wood screws, which are essential for creating a sturdy and lasting structure. Let's take a look at what you'd need to build your own outdoor shed.

  1. Planning and permits. Before you pick up a hammer and stop building. You need to check your local building codes and zoning regulations. Many areas require a permit for outdoor structures over a certain size. Take time to plan your sheds dimensions, design and location. Ideally you want somewhere level, accessible and not prone to flooding, especially if the shed is made of wood. You need to sketch a basic layout or use a free shed design software to visualise your plan which can be helpful.

  2. The materials you need. Once you have your plan, gather the necessary building materials. You may need pressure treated lumber for framing the floor, walls and roof as it resists rot and insect damage. Plywood or OSB panels for sheathing the walls and roof will be helpful for its sturdiness. Shingles or metal panels for the roof itself, depending on your preferred style and weather resistance. You also need to consider concrete blocks or gravel for the foundation and doors and hardware like hinges, handles, and a lock. A wide variety of wood screws would be useful too, to fasten most of these materials together, because unlike nails, wood screws provide stronger holding power and are easier to remove and adjust as needed.

  3. The tools that you'll need. Having the right tools can make the difference between a smooth project and a frustrating one, and the last thing you want to have to do is leave in the middle of the project to go and get them. You'll need a cordless drill, a circular saw, a tape measure, a level, a framing square, a hammer, a utility knife, and a ladder.

  4. Fasteners and connectors. Aside from wood screws, stock up on framing nails or structural screws, metal brackets and joist hangers for added support and weather resistant caulk for sealing any gaps. It might also be a good idea to invest in galvanised or coated screws and nails that resist moisture and won't degrade over time.

  5. Safety gear. When you're building a shed, you need to always prioritise your safety, so safety glasses, work gloves, hearing protection and dust masks are a good idea.

Building your own shed is a manageable DIY project with the right preparation. You don't want to have to down tools mid project to go and get new things, so planning in advance really helps.
